October is here, and Halloween is soon approaching. Who doesn’t love a holiday in which you can dress up and get free candy? Well, for adults this doesn’t apply so much anymore, but there are still other ways you can enjoy Halloween this year, solo or with your friends and family. When you combine the element of water with the spirit of Halloween, it makes for a magical combination. Luckily, we have a plethora of that here on Long Island, so get out and socialize this Halloween!

Halloween Costume Party Dinner Cruise aboard the Sapphire Princess

Eat, drink, and dance the night away aboard the beautiful Sapphire Princess, located on the famous Nautical Mile in Freeport. Ticket price includes DJ entertainment, appetizers, open buffet, dessert, and open bar. Come in costume so you can participate in the costume contest, and don’t forget to check out the fun blackjack table, equipped with prizes. If you are looking for something for the whole family, come to the costume brunch cruise that takes place the next day, the 29th, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. aboard the Sapphire Princess.

Great Jack-o’-Lantern Spectacular Sail at Belmont Lake State Park

This fun and FREE family-orientated Halloween event is the perfect way to spend a Saturday evening. The first 50 carved pumpkins received will set sail at dusk, as they are lit with candles, placed on flotation devices and sailed around Belmont Lake from the back of kayaks. However, before dusk sets have fun on the kid-friendly haunted house, visit the trick or treating stations, take funny photos, check out the petting zoo, and enjoy the Halloween-themed arts and crafts, as well as other fun Halloween attractions.

Halloween Cruise to Bug Light at the East End Seaport Museum

103 3rd St., Greenport. eastendseaport.org $10-$49 admission. October 28th and 29th from 4-6 p.m.

The Halloween excursion to Bug Lighthouse is a two-hour roundtrip cruise that is decked to the nines in ghoulish décor and full of Halloween surprises. Come and hear lighthouse ghost stories, play Halloween games, participate in the costume contest, explore the lighthouse, and enjoy some cider (or wine) and snacks. Luckily, there are two chances to enjoy this cruise. Saturday is for adults only, and it includes wine and cheese. If you want to bring the kids, there is also a family-friendly version on Sunday.

28th Annual Halloween Boat Burning at the Long Island Maritime Museum

Looking for a fun and non-scary family-friendly Halloween event? Come check out a unique Long Island Halloween tradition! Every year a large wooden boat is donated and set ablaze, making this occasion Long Island’s largest bonfire. Halloween costumes are encouraged, so come enjoy food, fun, raffles, and live entertainment. So come on down! If you play your cards right, you could be the lucky winner to go home with a new hand-crafted wooden boat!

Do you love the water, but don’t have your sea legs? No worries, there are other Halloween events that feature marine animals and the element of water, but don’t have anything to do with boats or being on one.

Leave the kids at home, throw on a costume or mask and come dance the night away at the Masquerade Ball at the Long Island Aquarium. Come and enjoy an evening full of Halloween festivities, music, and dancing. Price of admission includes an open bar, passed hors-d'oeuvres, and a light buffet. Just make sure you dress your best! Prizes will be awarded for the best masquerade attire and best costume.

Bats, Barnacles, & Broomsticks Halloween Party at the Long Island Aquarium

Before the Masquerade Ball, come with the kids and the whole family for the Bats, Barnacles, & Broomsticks Halloween Party. Just make sure you come in costume! Kids under 12 that come in costume will get half off admission with a paying adult. Enjoy the music while you trick or treat throughout the aquarium, check out the vendor tables, and play some fun games. The party is free with the price of admission, so check it out and don’t miss the penguin costume parade!

The Haunted Hatchery at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

This family-friendly event is full of fun, education, candy, and it’s not scary. Perfect for families with young children, come dressed in costume and enjoy the fun and games. Children will have the opportunity to trick or treat their way throughout the hatchery and aquarium and learn more about the creatures that inhabit our natural environment at the same time.
